Kena: Bridge of Spirits

This is a compilation of most of the work I did at Ember Lab on Kena.

This will be broken down into: Props, environment, and hats.

I used Zbrush for sculpting and Maya/Zbrush for retopo. All assets were textured using Substance Painter. I was not responsible for implementing these in the engine unless otherwise noted.

Please note that I will be updating this with in game screenshots as I play through the game.

Props

Rot Tear

This is an object Kena unlocks after boss fights. The Rot use this to transform and aid Kena.

On the left, I was given a concept and shown how they want these two pieces to work together. The center images are of the sculpt, wireframe, and Painter textures. The image below is how this looks in game.

Health Flower

This is something Kena can send the Rot to and gain health.

There were a few iterations on this one and I don't have the concept for this flower. I also created a closed and open version of this prop. The final plant has some changes to the leaf texture.

Teleport Flower

Kena ha the ability to teleport to this flower.

This was probably my favorite piece to work on. I created one of the blend shapes in Maya since we felt it might be difficult to do with rigging. The textures were my favorite part on this. In the third set of images to the left we can see a small crop of the concept. We didnt end up going with the arrows but I personally loved that part.

note: The bottom image is not mine. I haven't been this far into the game and I will replace it once I have a better in game shot.

Meditation Stump

For this I was given a rough block out, I refined the shape and added some sculptural tree elements. I started to accumulate a few other Painter files from other artist who had worked on the trees and thought, "Why would I try to recreate these when they have been created already?" I compiled all of the projects I had and started to make smart materials in my down time. This sped up the texturing process to just minutes for some assets.

Fruit

These are fruit the Rot can eat. We did a few iterations on this asset. The yellow fruit was the first iteration but we ended up going with the two purple fruits and flower.

Puzzle Pieces

For the last image in this section I can show you some puzzle pieces. For the Rubble I was given a rough block out and asked to add a sculpt and textures. In the game, they added a decal to show that this object is moveable. The bottom image is part of a rotating puzzle, I sculpted this piece. The texture work on both of these were from my collection of smart materials, I added hand painted elements to the parts that needed some extra push.

Environment

General Environment Items

Here are a few items that are scattered around the game. A few things to note here are the ring shaped Hallow Log on middle left of this image, the Jizo Statues, and the ladder.

This log is a huge tunnel Kena can walk through. The statues are scattered throughout the game. I was tasked with adding sculptural detail and texturing the ladder.

General Plants

These plants are scattered throughout the game. I was tasked with creating live versions and dead ones. The last two plants are in every rotten section of the game. I believe the maple leaf geometry was used in one of the cutscenes.

Rock Collection

The bridge was a sculpt of many rock assets we have that I manipulated in Zbrush. I was tasked to get the baked maps from my sculpt but not to texture this asset. The other rocks are scattered around the game.

Bomb Platforms

These platforms were something I worked on the entire time I spent at Ember Lab. I developed some of the grey box shapes to use earlier in the games development and slowly refined them as we needed them. We did not use my final textures but I believe some of my shapes are still in the game.

Dead Zone

Both of these assets were in the game, my job was to take the block outs we had and sculpt, retopo, and bake and deliver the maps generated from the bake.

Hats

One of my most proud contribution were the collectible hats. These are most of the hats that I created. These are a few close ups of some of the hat models I created. The cake and deer hats were of my own designs and concepts. All of the hats were super fun to make and I'm ecstatic to see the excitement from fans about the hats and my first game.

Thank you for reading.
