Wizard Cleaning Sim - GGJ

This project was made for Global Game Jam 2025 - theme: Bubbles. The project was created in 1 week in our spare time after work.

You play as a magical scrub brush who is tasked with cleaning the wizard's floating tower who is too tired after a long day of serving the people below.

The team was made up of 4 people: 2 artist (Chelsea and I), one animator who also worked as our programmer (Elliot), and another UI (Dotun) programmer.

I was one of those artist and this is the work I contributed to this project.

Props

With some collaboration with the team, I created these cleanable objects. I was also responsible for the floating candles that you will see in the coming photos.

These are those props in game.

Environments

This environment and level design were initially made by Chelsea. Once we had the rough design I came in and tweaked the look and decided the texture direction. I completed the textures and implementation into Unreal.

I was also responsible for the environment VFX and the lighting.

Lighting

Lighting is something that I always fall into. It was something I considered my weakest point coming out of school but something I can confidently say I like now.

VFX

The VFX in this game are simple yet effective. One of the tricks I used was for god rays. You can see my material breakdown using a scrolling texture and vertex painting and the effect in the world with simple geometry.

There is also something magical about floating particles. Even more so when they have a slight glow and twinkle, emulating distant stars. As you look up in the room you will see this effect, I don't think this room would have the same appeal without it.

We used the Niagara system for these VFX.

I also used a very simple effect to show flames flickering. It's by no means perfect but for a very quick pass for the jam, I'm very happy with it, especially the candles.

Characters

Originally we wanted to have two characters, a broom and the scrub brush, because it doesn't make that much sense to use a scrub brush on a painting or a book. Due to time we cut the broom and what's so special about magic if you can't use a scrub brush to magically clean anyway?

As an added fun character trait, they have faces. So, when you clean the object the face changes. This is something I would like to explore more as it was kind of difficult to see while cleaning in game.

UI

UI is something that I feel I can work on. This was my attempt at doing better UI and pushing myself. I'm happy with how this turned out but some was still rushed. I think I have improved a lot and the speech bubble is the one out of this UI set that I'm happiest with.

Where will we take this next?

We are considering developing this project more. We have had amazing reception from our local community and even shown it at an indie party during GDC 2025 and Sacramento's Developer Collective events- Capital Creative Showcase. We are fixing up a few bugs before we move forward to making it a full fledge game. Stay tuned!

Thank you so much for reading and check out the others on the project.
