I spent about a year and a half at Meta with most of that time dedicated to creating VFX. Here are some of the Emotes I made for Horizon Worlds using a new program to me, PopcornFX. Most of these emotes were made based of of concept art but some are original creations.
PopcornFX is node based and sometimes requires a lot of math and creative thinking. Also working in the Quest headset and Horizons while using Unity to bridge the gap had an extra layer of difficulty. They were a lot of fun to create and I loved the challenge.
I don't have access to better quality videos, the PopcornFX files, or the concept art to these emotes but I am happy to give contact info from the creators of the concept art that can vouch for the quality!
The following GIF is some GLSL I wrote with some help for a mobile app I was working on, BatAround. This was a test to see if we could add parallax in our batting simulator in a very efficient way.
For this fire I used the UE asset store tool FluidNinja by Andras Ketzer.
This tool allows you to create stylized smoke sims that you can export as PNGs. I took the exported images into photoshop where I used a contour filter. I then exported them to Procreate to create the linework, I used Procreate because the brush - Baskerville has much better smoothing and lazy mouse controls then Photoshop. After creating the lines I reimported it back into Photoshop where I colored them in. On a new layer I added shading then used the filter Halftone on to create the printed halftone effect. Once this is complete I put it into Unreal where I created a material to play the flipbook animation.
Chaos Engine
This broken ant farm was modeled whole and broken using UE5's Chaos system. I was then able to export the results where I cleaned up the model in Zbrush and Maya, separated out the materials, and made UVs in Maya.
In my game jam game The Bee's Knees I created all of the art and VFX in a week to give the character some visual appeal and player feedback.
The title screen also has some VFX to suggest that the bees are chatting amongst themselves before the show.
This is a short compilation of some of my older VFX from college that I created in Unreal Engine 4.
The first clip shows an energy ball that the player can throw.
Second clip is an example of fire using a flip book technique.
Third is an energy beam.
Fourth is rain that bounces off of objects.
Fifth is a god ray and dust or mist. I have used this many time in my other work.
